Description
Fort Hammenhiel, Sri Lanka - February 20, 2017: A view of the island on which Fort Hammenhiel was built by Portuguese colonial authorities in the mid-17th century to guard the entrance to the Jaffna peninsula, northern Sri Lanka. The fort was later used by the Dutch and British colonial authorities, including as a high security prison. Presently, the fort has been converted into a luxury resort hotel operated by the Sri Lankan Navy. The wharf pier for boats bringing guests from the mainland is visible.
